Book Review #15 - The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger

Good Day,

The Catcher in the Rye
by J.D. Salinger

It is a story of a teenage boy who craves simply for companion, yet is hapless due to the complexity of his thinking which is engendered due to his angst against the superficiality of the society.

Summary:
The whole story is narrated by 17 year old Holden Caulfield on the incidents which take place in his life when he was 16. It starts from him being suspended from Pency Prep in Pennsylvania as he is not applying himself in the studies and manages to flunk all the subjects except English. He leaves his hostel and plans to spend Christmas in New York City all by himself. Here he has a lot of distinct experiences ranging from fairly positive to disastrous.

Will Holden be able to adjust himself in this world which is filled with superficiality and get rid of the feeling of alienation?

Review:
Writing style of author is very simple, you get a strong taste of language used in New York in 1950's. City has been lucidly described. In my opinion author has done an exceptionally commendable job in narrating this story in terms of a 16 year old boy. While reading the book you will definitely feel that you are literally inside Holden's mind. Author has intricately written the thought process, which tells us a lot about his understanding of human mind.

While reading the book different people will be able to relate to different aspects pointed out by the character, it is highly relatable. Holden is shown to be a character who is transforming from an immature to a mature person. His various decisions reflect the lack of maturity while the way he acts and behaves in diverse situations, further his train of thought on some issues show how he has grown. Ending scene of the book is very emotional. Author has beautifully written the climax as it open to interpretation. Book has strong language, lewd content written in a way which makes it palatable yet it is very effective in delivering the tone.

My opinion: Great BOOK
