Book Review #5 - Fire on the mountain by Anita Desai

Good Day,

Fire on the mountain
By Anita Desai

The book can be aptly described by the hindi phrase 'Chhota packet bada dhamaka'. It is very concise yet it has a robust and vivid description of Kasauli.

Story:
Nanda Kaul, widow of Vice-Chancellor is an old lady who seeks solitude in her house on the Upper Mall named Carignano. She doesnot invite and entertain any guests, even the postboy walking up her street itches her eyes. Nanda is content with her house and the view which she enjoys from Carignano. But one day her daughter Asha sends her a postcard, Asha wanted her grandchild to live with Nanda. Despite being not happy with desicion she was not able to deny her daughter. Raka was a curious child who much like her great-grandmother wanted to be left alone. She was always upto some secret adventure and busy in exploring the hills of Kasauli. Ila Das an old friend of Nanda comes to visit her. Ila had a ravenous voice. Das was the only person who kept in touch with Nanda on regular basis.
Ila lived a tragic life owing to fact that all thier property had to be sold because of the extravagant debts of her brother living in America.

Review:
This book literally has no story yet the climax is reasonable and at the same time mind-boggling. Many a times it happens so and it happens even to the best of us that we are not able to picturize, this book will surely give you those moments if you are just skimming so i would suggest do read the book carefully and enjoy the bliss..
