Book Review #5 - Fire on the mountain by Anita Desai

Good Day, Fire on the mountain By Anita Desai The book can be aptly described by the hindi phrase 'Chhota packet bada dhamaka'. It is very concise yet it has a robust and vivid description of Kasauli. Story: Nanda Kaul, widow of Vice-Chancellor is an old lady who seeks solitude in her house on the Upper Mall named Carignano. She doesnot invite and entertain any guests, even the postboy walking up her street itches her eyes. Nanda is content with her house and the view which she enjoys from Carignano. But one day her daughter Asha sends her a postcard, Asha wanted her grandchild to live with Nanda. Despite being not happy with desicion she was not able to deny her daughter. Raka was a curious child who much like her great-grandmother wanted to be left alone. She was always upto some secret adventure and busy in exploring the hills of Kasauli. Good Day, We the living By Ayn Rand " We the living" by Ayn Rand is a very depressive story giving us the touch of reality of that period in Russia, after the Revolution. Story: Kira Argounova is the sun of the book. In times when all your decisions were made by the party, no freedom of speech or thought was to be exercised by the citizens and party was the supreme force not to clash with. She was the kind of person who had her own philosophy, values, and dreams of becoming an engineer, she knew what she wanted rather she was a perfect iconoclast, a maverick of bourgeois decent yet she had to surpress her traits for love. She belonged to an opulent family which lost everything owing to the nationalization after revolution. So the story changes when she comes across a very handsome stranger on a very ugly street.
